Spyros Vassiliou’s “A Voyage to
China”, via Piraeus
With the support of the Prefecture of Piraeus, The Atelier Spyros Vassiliou is
welcoming back a series of twelve watercolors the artist painted to illustrate
his voyage to China in 1979.
This series of paintings entitled “A voyage to China” had remained unknown to
the public until recently when the Prefect of Piraeus, Yannis Michas, took the
initiative to exhibit them at the Hellenic Yacht Club in honor of Greece’s
passing of the Olympic Flame to China for the Beijing 2008 Olympiad.
From October 1st to March 31st, an exhibit of the China watercolors can be
viewed at the former home and studio of Spyros Vassiliou (1902/3-1985), which is
now open as a Museum and Archive dedicated to the artist and his lifelong work.
The permanent exhibition of paintings, prints, and other work will remain the
same.
Furthermore, the Prefecture of Piraeus offered the Atelier Spyros Vassiliou a
printed edition of reproductions of the twelve China watercolors, in loose form
and in an elegant folder. These folders, each containing 12 individual prints,
are available at the Vassiliou Museum Shop for € 90. The shop also sells a
selection of Vassiliou prints, lithographs, original silk-screen prints (signed
and numbered by Vassiliou), books, and other items as well. All sales are in
support of the Atelier Spyros Vassiliou. Private and corporate funding or
sponsorship are also welcome.
The Atelier Spyros Vassiliou is located in downtown Athens at 5a, Webster St, a
few steps below the Dionyssiou Aeropagitou promenade, just under the Acropolis
and across from the Herod Atticus Theatre. (Metro: Acropolis). Opening hours are
from 10am to 8pm daily, 10am to 3pm on weekends, tel: 210-923-1502.
The Atelier is also available for private
and corporate events, as well as lectures and presentations.
